The idea

Two cities standing in the same place

Four days is not enough for İstanbul. Nothing is. But with a small group, a private vehicle and a guide who does not have to shout across forty people, four days is enough to stop seeing a list of monuments and start seeing what this programme is actually about: two empires that built on top of one another for sixteen centuries without either of them quite erasing what came before. Every day below crosses that seam at least once.

Day by day

Four days, three nights

Day 1

Arrival, and the square after dark

  • Arrival at İstanbul Airport: you are met in the arrivals hall and transferred to your hotel by private vehicle. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to rest or to walk.
  • The welcome dinner — the one meal the programme gives you — and afterwards a short walk through Sultanahmet once the day groups have gone — Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque lit against the dark, and the square almost empty. It is the hour the city keeps for people who are staying.
Overnight: İstanbul
Day 2

The imperial core — both of them, on one hill

  • Hagia Sophia: for nine hundred years the largest church in Christendom, then a mosque, then a museum, and a mosque again. The dome engineers still argue about, and the Byzantine mosaics above.
  • Hagia Irene: the first church of Constantinople, older than Hagia Sophia beside it — never converted, never plastered over, and still standing inside the palace walls.
  • Topkapı Palace and the Imperial Harem: four centuries of empire were run from these courtyards. The Treasury, the Sacred Relics, the Harem, and the terrace above the point where the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara meet — the reason the city is where it is.
  • The Basilica Cistern: Justinian's underground reservoir — three hundred and thirty six columns in the dark, two of them standing on Medusa heads nobody can explain.
  • The Grand Bazaar: sixty covered streets, four thousand shops, and five hundred years of practice at selling to visitors. Your guide stays with you.
Overnight: İstanbul  ·  Optional this evening: private Bosphorus cruise
Day 3

The walls, the Chora and the Golden Horn

  • The Theodosian land walls: out to Edirnekapı and the fortification that held this city for a thousand years and then, on one morning in 1453, did not.
  • The Chora — Kariye: beside the walls, whose fourteenth-century mosaics and frescoes are the finest Byzantine painting anywhere in the world, and which almost no four-day programme finds room for.
  • Fener and Balat: down the hill to the oldest continuously inhabited quarters of the city — the Ecumenical Patriarchate of St George, still the senior see of Orthodox Christianity; the Bulgarian church of St Stephen, cast in iron in Vienna, shipped down the Danube and bolted together on this shore; and the painted timber streets between them, where the group stops for lunch.
  • Süleymaniye: back along the water to Sinan's mosque and his answer to Hagia Sophia — the architect is buried in the corner of his own garden.
  • Across the Golden Horn to Galata: the ferry crossing the city has made for fifteen hundred years, then the tower, the long walk down İstiklal, and the evening ends over dinner in Beyoğlu.
Overnight: İstanbul
Day 4

The Asian shore, Dolmabahçe and departure

  • Üsküdar and Kuzguncuk: morning on the Asian side — Kuzguncuk's painted timber houses, and a street where a mosque, a synagogue and two churches have stood side by side for a very long time.
  • Ortaköy and Dolmabahçe: back across the water to the palace the Ottomans built when they decided to stop looking like an eastern empire — six hundred rooms, four tonnes of chandelier, and the room where Atatürk died with every clock in the building stopped at the hour.
  • The Spice Bazaar: a last hour where the city has been trading since 1664.
  • Departure: transfer to İstanbul Airport, timed to your flight.
Departure
Why the order of the days can change. Topkapı closes on Tuesdays and Dolmabahçe on Mondays, and the two cannot be moved. Every departure on this calendar is anchored so that neither falls on a closing day, but within the four days the order may be adjusted for weather, for traffic and for the hour the light is right on the water. Nothing is dropped; the sequence is what moves.
Day-by-day Itinerary

Download the full programme

The four-day İstanbul programme in full, day by day, with what is included and what is not — ready to read or to share with the people travelling with you.

Please note: the day-by-day programme is indicative and may change. Site opening days, weather, traffic and local conditions can move the order of visits, and hotels are confirmed at the time of booking. Nothing listed is dropped — it is the sequence that moves. The file on this page is always the current version.

Four days, and everything after them

This programme is a basis, not a limit

Four days is a decision about your time, not about the city. İstanbul does not run out. There are more museums here than a week would cover, a Byzantine layer and an Ottoman one that each deserve a trip of their own, whole quarters we had no room to name on this page, and food that changes from one street to the next.

So read the four days above as the starting shape. If you want a fifth day, or a sixth. If there is a museum you have been meaning to see, a restaurant someone told you about, a hamam, an evening of music, a day given entirely to the Bosphorus, a synagogue or a church you want to pray in, a concert, a football match. If you are travelling with children, or with someone who cannot walk far, and the days need to be built differently.

Tell us. Travel privately and the programme belongs to you rather than to a coach schedule. İstanbul covers all of it, and so do we — we will rebuild the days around what you actually want and price that programme instead.

Every departure runs Sunday to Wednesday for a small group of four to twelve guests. Choose the week that suits you and register — registration is free and carries no obligation.

Travelling as two? Join any departure — couples are welcome, and a date is confirmed once it reaches its minimum group size. Would you rather not share? Four days in İstanbul on a fixed date, opened for a small group. Why these four days: Topkapı closes on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe and the imperial palaces on Mondays, the Grand Bazaar on Sundays. These are the one window in late November where nothing in this programme falls on its closing day.

This departure is for travellers who already hold a valid visa for Türkiye, or who need none. There is not enough time to obtain one before 25 November. Gulf nationals — Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, Qatari, Bahraini and Omani — need no visa for a tourist stay. If you do need one and do not hold it, write to us anyway and we will put you on the January or February departure instead.
Day 1
Arrival, and the welcome dinner Wed 25 Nov

Met at İstanbul Airport and driven to the hotel. The afternoon is yours. In the evening the welcome dinner, where you meet your guide and the group.

Day 2
The imperial core — both of them, on one hill Thu 26 Nov

Hagia Sophia, then Topkapı Palace with the Harem and the terrace over the Bosphorus. After lunch the Basilica Cistern, then the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque.

Day 3
The last empire, and the hill the Genoese built Fri 27 Nov

Dolmabahçe Palace in the morning — the crystal staircase, the four-and-a-half tonne chandelier, the clock stopped at five past nine. The afternoon crosses the Golden Horn to Karaköy and up to the Galata Tower.

Day 4
What the city actually sells, and then home Sat 28 Nov

The Grand Bazaar, then the Spice Bazaar, and a last stop at the Süleymaniye Mosque before the private transfer to İstanbul Airport.

What the price includes
  • 3 nights at the Riva Hotel, İstanbul, with breakfast
  • The welcome dinner on the first evening
  • A licensed English-speaking guide throughout
  • A private air-conditioned vehicle with driver throughout
  • All entrance fees for the places named above
  • Airport transfers on arrival and departure, by private vehicle
  • Someone reachable in Türkiye for the whole of your stay
What it does not include
  • International flights — we can quote these separately
  • Visa or e-visa fees — paid to the government directly
  • Travel insurance — we advise it, but we do not sell it
  • Lunches and all dinners other than the welcome dinner
  • Drinks, tips and personal spending
  • The private Bosphorus cruise — offered as an option, priced separately
  • Anything not written above

The single supplement applies to the whole stay, not per night. Children's rates apply when the child shares a room with two adults, and reduced-rate children do not count towards the minimum of six.

Two dates, and they are close together. Friday 30 October — confirm your place: send the names exactly as they appear in the passports and say whether you want a twin, a double or a single. We reply the same day with our bank details. Friday 6 November — your transfer must have reached our account. We ask for the full amount by bank transfer rather than a deposit, because there are under four weeks to departure and the rooms are held on a non-refundable rate. Places are confirmed in the order the transfers arrive.

Why the week starts on a Sunday. Topkapı closes on Tuesdays and Dolmabahçe on Mondays, and neither can be moved. A Sunday start is the only anchor that clears both — Topkapı on the Monday, the land walls, the Chora and Fener–Balat on the Tuesday, Dolmabahçe on the Wednesday — and it ends midweek.
Three weeks on, one week off. March and May carry two departures because Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı take the rest of those months.
Private departures. The programme can be operated privately on any date of your choosing, including the weeks left clear here.
Rates: $1,499 Value · $1,649 High · $1,899 Peak, per person two sharing, for every 2027 departure; single room +$80 / +$105 / +$135. Register your interest and we will confirm your week within three business days — or write to tour@travioneglobal.com. No obligation.
